Supporting Mental Health at Work

By Ruchi Bhuwania Lohia

Mental health is no longer a peripheral wellbeing issue; it is a core business consideration. With rising levels of absenteeism and burnout affecting productivity, staff morale, and retention, organisations that take a proactive approach to mental wellbeing are undoubtedly better positioned to perform sustainably over the long term.

While leadership culture and workload design are important, research shows that daily nutrition and lifestyle choices play a crucial role in how individuals manage stress. To make this practical, I present five workplace strategies.

Support Brain Function Through Key Nutrients

B vitamins, magnesium, and omega-three fatty acids are essential for neurotransmitter production and a healthy nervous system. Prioritising oily fish, nuts and seeds, and leafy greens helps maintain cognitive performance and emotional resilience throughout the working day.

Maintain Steady Energy Through Balanced Meals

Fluctuating blood sugar can lead to energy dips and reduced concentration. Including a combination of protein and fibre at each lunch time helps stabilise blood sugar levels. This supports sustained focus, mood regulation, and overall mental clarity.

Rethink Caffeine and Hydration Habits

Excessive caffeine, especially later in the day, can increase anxiety. Regular hydration and moderating caffeine intake after midday help maintain calmer energy levels and improved concentration.

Build Movement Into the Working Day

Prolonged sitting reduces circulation and can contribute to mental fatigue. Periodic short movement breaks, walking meetings, or standing desks help regulate stress hormones, improve mood, and enhance cognitive clarity.

Protect Sleep as a Performance Tool

Consistent, high-quality sleep underpins emotional regulation, memory, and decision-making. Encouraging boundaries around late-night emails and supporting flexible start times where possible reinforces the message that recovery is essential for sustained performance.
